King of the titans

At bauma, the world's leading trade fair for construction equipment and mining machines, the wheel loaders weigh 400 tonnes, the excavators have shovels that can scoop up entire houses and the cranes reach into the heavens. This is "large" on a massive scale. A total of 3,400 exhibitors stepped into the spotlight on 600,000 square metres of floor space – making this the biggest trade fair on the planet. Everything here is gigantic. And yet once again, one stand stood head and shoulders above the rest.Following its debut appearance at bauma in 2010, Liebherr's new pavilion has now wowed hundreds of thousands of visitors three times in succession. Designed by Stuttgart-based KTP architects and built by DISPLAY INTERNATIONAL, the company's trade fair pavilion continues to set new benchmarks. Five months' construction time and roughly 1,000 tonnes of steel went into the prestige structure boasting a usable area of 6,000 square metres and 13,500 square metres of exhibition space.Constructed around a steel skeleton and finished with sophisticated interior finesse, the pavilion comprises 72 meeting rooms, numerous VIP lounges, three lifts, restaurants, a trucker bar and a fan shop. While inside, visitors are met with staircases echoing those in the Paris department store Galeries Lafayette, the exterior features a wrap-around walkway with precious wood flooring that offers an uninhibited view of all the exhibits. The entire presentation is framed by light-spangled panoramic glazing. In short, the result is a superlative showcase that catches the eye from a distance, a magical magnet for visitors even without the towering presence of the global market leader's cranes.Since the premiere of what German magazine Focus dubbed the "Taj Mahal of Liebherr's regal trade fair presence", the pavilion has garnered the full clutch of prizes, including the silver Adam Award in the XXL category and a red dot award in the event design category. Even at DISPLAY INTERNATIONAL, we are staggered at this monumental achievement.
